Giving Away The Farm
I’ve decided to follow in the footsteps of so many folks before me and make some of my work available to all, for free. This particular film is very easy to do that with because it’s short and sweet. And in as much as the film was done as a collaborative effort — and completed very quickly — I figure, what the heck.
You are about to see my film, “The First Time.” This film was made as part of my submission to be considered for Mark Burnett and Steven Spielberg’s reality show, On the Lot. My first film, Renounced was listed on the website for public viewing and was well-received. Then Sunday night I got a call from the producers of the show. They told me they wanted me to make another film. Only this time I had just a week to get it done. From the rooter to the tooter; I had one week to write, cast, hire crew, rehearse, shoot, edit and score the film. It was a great time!
I wrote the script on Monday. The crew was assembled by Wednesday. I met with the actors on Thursday. We shot the film on Saturday. I edited until early Sunday morning. Rob scored it on Sunday. I finished the edit Sunday night and shipped it off on Monday.
A week later I got a second call from the producers of On The Lot after I’d completed about 70 pages of contract legalese. There were 12,000 entries into the competition. The show would start with the top 50 contestants based on their films. I made it to the top 100 out of that 12,000 but I but missed the cut-off. That sucked.
So now the film is available as part of my short film collection; Pulp Fusion: The RAW Shorts. The collection includes five of my short films, all presented in their original formats. Nothing has not been remastered and the films have not be recut. As good or as ungood as the films were when I first made them, that’s what you get. Hence, the raw label.
So the film you are about to see is called, “The First Time.” When the producers of On The Lot told me I needed to make this film they had one stipulation: I needed to include a theme. I forget what the first two themes were, but the theme I chose was the first time. I tried to be shrewd thinking whomever chose that themes would probably write something about the first time a person fell in love or the first time someone had sex. I decided to write about the first time someone became a murderer. And then I decided to give it a little spin.
You can watch the film below and after you watch you can download it (30MB) and share it with anyone you want to. It’s licensed under the Creative Common’s agreement so you’ve got to keep it intact and completely unchanged. And credit must be given where credit is due.

Dammit – my computer is just too damn old for these……they just don’t play…..they freeze up….. I think I need to ask Santa for a new one this year. What ever happened to On The Lot? I loved that show and was hoping it would return. I guess not…..
Thanks for watching. As I look back, yes, there were plenty of more fresh options available for the theme though it’s tough write something fresh and poignant when under the gun
That’s pretty raw
You may have avoided student/indie interpretations of “the first time” into sex, but you fell into the trap of murder and death, d’oh!
Worth a watch though, the performances are great and although you can see the twist coming a mile off … well, just see for yourself.
