AS you may know, if you’ve been paying attention, I’ve recently launched my web series, “Sex, Shoes & Unicorns” It stars Tammi Rhasonda, Cherish Hamultoff, Kathryn Weisbeck and Josie Noel. It’s written in the vein of Sex and the City meets Desperate Housewives.
Prior to launching SSU I did some very minor research about promoting a web series. I asked myself questions like:
- How did “The Guild” become so popular? How long did it take?
- Where does one promote a web series?
- Should I start promoting from the first episode or upload 2 or 3 eps first?
- If I use other sites to promote my series (like DailyMotion, Revver, YouTube, etc) how do I get people to come to my site?
- What marketing/promotion model should I use?
Then I thought to myself. There is no model for marketing and promoting a web series. It’s like the [now] classic line from The Matrix.
“As you’re trying to bend the spoon with your mind just remember one thing…there is no spoon.“
There is no spoon. There is no model. The model is what we make it.
So instead of trying to find some cookie-cutter method to promote my web series I figured I’d just play it by ear. My first step was to cut three episodes and load them up. Then I uploaded to several video site like YouTube, Yahoo Videos, Daily Motion, Myspace etc. Next I’ll add some links on Twitter and Facebook and then see how she rolls.
The cool thing about this web series is that it hasn’t cost me anything. I finished it several years ago. Thus it is the perfect project to launch me into the real of web series. Since it was actually a feature film written in TV series format the requisite “commercial breaks” are there.
So, go check out Sex, Shoes and Unicorns. Leave a comment. Let me know what you think.
