1001 Positively True Stories of An Indie Filmmaker

Angelo Bell's Painfully Exhilarating Adventures in Independent Filmmaking

Week in Review

October 29th, 2009 by Angelo

It’s been an interesting week.

Monday was the TV premiere of Broken Hearts Club, on the AMGTV network — a network that most of my friends, family and colleagues did not have access to. My wife and I were sick with some sort of stomach flu and my baby girl threw up in our bed that night. When we tuned in to try to watch BHC on channel 64 we got three hours of Asian programming. #Fail

Tuesday I was informed that I’d shipped the wrong version of the film and some curses made it to the airwaves. So… the series did make it to air, but it was a dubious achievement because the network received complaints. Words like “brick shithouse,” “asshole” and “goddamn” got through.  Ooops.  Thankfully I also received some potential good news about another network’s interest in the film/series. That night I reviewed all six episodes and performed a second round of perfunctory dialog editing. I even decided to add some VO’s to cover some of the language and I added VO SFX to a dream sequence. I figured,  why not? I was already editing. Do it.

Wednesday was spent making two copies of the newly edited series. I also made copies of a new trailer. Then I gathered what I thought was the best six of the episodes (I chose eps 1, 4 and 6) to submit to another network. Later, I was off to the post office to overnight everything to everyone who needed it.

Later I got an Tweet from @AaronKaiser about possibly meeting up in Burbank so he could pick my brain. Although there’s not much lingering in the ole gray matter nowadays, I agreed. I then rescheduled with @CarterMason so we could meed for coffee directly afterwards.

Around 9pm I got a text from an actor friend, Sean. Sean studies with Ivana Chubbick and there was a producer (whose name I must withhold) who made an announcement: he needed a script by Thursday morning. Ouch. Long story short: as I am told, a production was in play but fell apart. Apparently there was still money available. But no horror, no drugs, no gangs. And the script needed to be adapted to  be filmed in Panama. Luckily I had just the thing, a little action buddy flick I wrote last year, which I now call, “The Handler.”

In the story an insubordinate Black Ops spy teams up with a Gamer to stop the kidnapping of a politician’s son, but realize they’ve set up a chain reaction that will lead to political assassination – and THEY are the fall guys.

I did a quick once-over of the script, moved some scenes around, renamed a few of the character and wrote up a fresh three page treatment. I emailed the documents at midnight.

Thursday (today) is a slow day. Nothing planned. And now that I have this blog out of the way I’m going to drink some coffee and read the script from @MrBarnard1 titled, “Hollywood Boys
