Reach Hollywood and BBC Producers via the Circalit free screenwriting contest.

April 19th, 2010
by Angelo

I was contacted by Circalit and asked to forward their information to anyone who might visit my site from time to time. Since I hope my fellow screenwriters pop in every now and then, I’ve decided to post this info below. I have no affiliation with Circalit and I always advise writers to register their work with the WGA or the Library of Congress.

The BBC and Hollywood Producers to Judge Monthly Screenwriting Competition on Circalit.

Screenwriters across the globe are posting their scripts up at www.circalit.com where BBC and Hollywood producers are now reviewing winning scripts with a view to production. The competition takes place monthly and is divided into television scripts, feature length screenplays and shorts. The winning scripts are decided every month by public vote and are then sent to BBC and Hollywood producers to be reviewed and potentially produced. The BBC will be reviewing the winning television script each month, whilst Julie Richardson, managing member of Imaginarium Entertainment Group and best known as the producer of box office hit “Collateral” will be reviewing the winning short (any screenplay under 60 pages). Meanwhile, feature length screenplays are being judged by Hollywood scriptwriter, Tom Lazarus, and Europe’s premier script development organisation, The Script Factory, in partnership with Twentieth Century Fox, Columbia and a host of other major production studios.

Tom Lazarus, screenwriter and director, author of nine produced features, Master Class instructor at UCLA Extension Writer’s Program and International Film Consultant, commented, “Circalit is a welcome addition to screenwriting community and a good place for writers to network and make industry contacts.”

Briony Hanson, Co-Director of The Script Factory, commented, “We’re very excited by Circalit’s project to offer writers the chance to find support for their screenplays. The site is clear, user-friendly and it seems like only a matter of time before Circalit becomes known as one of the essential places for the industry to look for new screenwriting talent and we’re happy to be working with them to help screenwriters.”

Good afternoon, I was thrilled to see such services. my name is Nadia
Ramadan, Libyan nationality and i am studying at informatics university in
Business Administration and information technology, but as a hobby i write
    stories whenever i am free.

Well, I have just finished wiring a story which was planned to be a novel,
but later on when i red the story myself and also gave it to other people
to read it, they told me that it would have been better if it was a
screenplay, i have never written a screen play but i have always wrote
stories, but this story that i wrote called “The Magnificent Cat” was
actually considered by many people that it should preferably turned into a
screen play, i would love to find an agent who can help me with this
story, who knows maybe it could be a big breakthrough.

PS. I have submitted my Story to Circalit.com

    Thank you

    Best Regards
    Nadia

Well, so much for JULIE RICHARDSON!

I am the CIRCALIT April 2010 short script winner with my script WOMAN, FIRST – and after a 30 day wait for my review, Ms. Richardson never showed up and there was no review!

    How’s them bananas?

What does this say about not only the website (no apology received) and the so-called industry “professionals”?

This has led to considerable ill-feeling among Circalit members and has seen a number of founding members leave the site as it seems more geared towards running ‘contests’ and awarding readers ’stars’ than actually helping writers get their work reviewed on on-screen.

Circalit has turned into a bit of a circus as they refuse to explain how their ‘ranking’ system works, so nobody knows what’s going on. It’s all about “fanning” and “voting” for scripts, rather than actually reading and reviewing them.

To me, a peer review website should be about well . . . peer reviews. Not fancy “no show” contests and silly stars – as if we’re all schoolchildren seeking the teacher’s praise.

My prediction? I think, unless Circalit pulls their finger out and starts concentrating on peer reviews instead of the aesthetics of the site, it will go the way so many of these script reviews have gone – to oblivion.

    It’s getting there fast . . .

I am so disgusted, I set up my own screenplay review website where at least member’s script are read and reviewed, which is the whole point, after all.
